Shift Register

A component of an electronic computer consisting of either a two-or three-dimensional array matrix of magnetic cores, electron tubes, and semiconductor or transistor circuitry in which digital data are stored. Electronic command signals cause the stored data to be shifted to the left or right of its present position by arithmetic functions prior to being transferred to other components of the computer or to outside facilities, such as a telephone line. Excludes microcircuit, digital and register, message, computer.
