Routes of entry: inhalation: yes skin: unknown ingestion: yes
health hazards acute and chronic: excessive amounts may cause collapse
and damage to the heart. Inhalation-in confined or poorly
ventilated areas, vapors can unconsciousness. High levels over
10000 ppm can cause dizziness, drunkness; concentrations as low as
10,000 ppm can cause unconsciousness. These high levels may cause
cardiac arrythmias. Excessive exposure may cause irritation to the
upper respiratory tract.
explanation of carcinogenicity: methylene chloride is listed as a
potential carcinogen by iarc. Methylene chloride has been shown to
increase the rate of spontaneously occurring malignant tumors in
the b6c3f1 mouse and benign tumors in laboratory rats. Other
animals studies, as well as several human epidemiology studies,
failed to show a tumorigenic response relatable to methylene
chloride
effects of overexposure: early to moderate central nervous system
depression may be giddiness, headache, dizziness, and nausea; in
extreme cases, unconsciousness and death may occur.
medical cond aggravated by exposure: preexisting skin, eye, and
respiratory disorders may be aggravated by exposure to this
product.
First aid: eyes contact-immediately flush eyes with large amounts of
water for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention immediately.
vapors may be irritating to the eyes. Skin contact- immediately
flush with w ater for 15 minutes. Inhalation-remove victim to fresh
air and provide oxygen if breathing is difficult. Give artificial
respiration if not breathing. Get medical attention immediately.
ingestion-do n ot induce vomiting. Do not give liquids to a drowsy,
convulsing or unconsciousness person. Give large quantity of water.
if vomiting occurs, repeat liquid administration. Get medical
attention immedia tely.
