Pawl

A catching device of various shapes and cross sections, which permits motion in only one direction. Designed to engage the teeth or notches of a sector, quadrant, ratchet wheel, or the like. Item is so pivoted that the angle of approach to the interdental engagement causes it to rest more firmly as the reverse load is increased. Item may be spring actuated to cause engagement. Excludes cam (as modified).
