Hazards

Reports of carcinogenicity: ntp: yes iarc: yes osha: yes
health hazards acute and chronic: eyes: if a cell ruptures, contact with
leaked electrolyte is corrosive to eye tissues. May result in
permanent blindness. Nickel oxide may cause minor irritation. Skin:
contact with electrolyte may cause serious burns to skin tissues.

nickel compounds may cause skin sensitization. Ingestion:
electrolyte may cause tissue damage to throat and gastro /
respiratory tract. Nickel compound may cause nausea, intestinal
disorders. Inhalation: effects of inhaling electrolyte varies from
mild irritation of nasal mucous membranes to damage of lung
tissues. Chronic exposure to cadmium compounds may re sult in
pulmonary edema, kidney damage.

explanation of carcinogenicity: niosh recommends that nickel and cadmium
be treated as occupational carcinogens.

effects of overexposure: normally the sealed battery is non hazardous.

the health effects in this msds are based on battery case being
breached and the hazardous ingredients leaking. Eyes: corrosion of
eye tissue, blindness. skin: serious burns of skin tissue, skin
sensitiaztion, eczema, nickel itch. ingestion: nausea, intestinal
disorders, tissue damage in throat area, gastrointestinal tract,
and respiratory tract. Inha lation: symptoms vary from mild
irritation to damage of lung tissue including dry throat, cough,
headache, vomiting, chest pain, chills, pulmonary edema, breathing
difficulty, prostration, and kidney damage.

First Aid

First aid: eye contact: flush with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes if abuse causes safety vents to activate. Get immediate
medical attention. Skin contact: remove contaminated clothing and
flush affected areas with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.

wash with soap and water. Ingestion: do not induce vomiting. Dilute
by giving water. If available give several glasses of milk, get
immediate medic al attention. Do not give anything by mouth to an
unconscious person. Inhalation: move to fresh air. Give oxygen or
artificial respiration if needed. Get immediate medical attention.
