health hazards acute and chronic: inhalation: breathing of sulfuric acid
vapors or mists may cause severe respiratory irritation. Inhalation
of lead dust/fumes may cause irritation of upper respiratory tract
& lungs. Ingestion: sulfuric acid may cause severe irritation of
mouth, throat, esophagus & stomach. Lead compounds may cause
abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea & severe cramping. This
may lead to systemic toxicty. Skin contact: sulfuric acid causes
severe irritation, burns & ulceration. Lead compounds are not
absorbed by the skin. Eye contact: sulfuric acid causes severe
irritation, burns, cornea damage, blindness. Le ad compounds may
cause eye irritation.

explanation of carcinogenicity: sulfuric acid: iarc lists "strong
inorganic acid mist containing sulfuric acid" as a category 1
carcinogen. Classification does not apply to liquid forms as found
in a battery. Lead is listed as a iar c 2b carcinogen (likely in
animals but lacking proof of human carcinogenicity). Arsenic is
listed by ntp & iarc as a carcinogen after exposure to high doses.

effects of overexposure: acute: sulfuric acid: severe skin irritation,
damage to cornea, upper respiratory irritation. Lead compounds:
headache, fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, muscular aches
and weakness, sleep di sturbances, irritability. Chronic: sulfuric
acid: possible erosion of teeth, inflammation of nose, throat and
bronchial tubes. Lead compounds: anemia, neuropathy-particularly of
the motor nerves with wrist drop, kidney damage, reproductive
changes in both males and females.

medical cond aggravated by exposure: over exposure to sulfuric may
aggravate pulmonary conditions, eczema, contact dermatitis. Lead
and its compounds may aggravate some forms of kidney, liver and
neurologic diseases.

First Aid

First aid: inhalation: sulfuric: remove to fresh air. If breathing
difficult, give oxygen. Lead: remove from exposure, gargle, wash
nose and lips. Consult physician. Ingestion: sulfuric acid: give
large quantiti es of water. Do not induce vomiting! Consult
physician. Lead: consult physician immediately. Skin: sulfuric
acid: flush with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.

remove contaminated clothes completely, including shoes. Lead:
wash immediately with soap and water. Eyes: sulfuric acid and lead:
flush immediately with large amounts of water for at least 15
minutes. Consult physician.
