Hazards

Routes of entry: inhalation: yes skin: yes ingestion: yes
reports of carcinogenicity: ntp: no iarc: no osha: no
health hazards acute and chronic: nitrogen is a simple asphyxiant &
constitutes 78% of the air we breathe.Nitrogendoes not support life
& may produce immediately hazardous atmospheres through the
displacement of oxygen.Nitrogen unde r high pressure can produce
narcosiseven though oxygen sufficient for life is present.

effects of overexposure: may produce dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of
consciousness,& death.Death may result from errors in
judgment.Confusion,or loss of consciousness. At low oxygen
concentrations & death may occur in second s w/out
warning.Extensive tissue damageor burns can result from exposure to
liq nit or cold nitrogen vapors.

First Aid

First aid: persons suffering from lack of oxy should be moved to areas
w/normal atmospheres.Self-contained breathing apparatus may be
required to prevent asphyxiantion of rescue workers.Assisted
respiration & su pplemental oxy should be given if the victim is
not breathing. Is cryogenic liq or cold boil-off gas contacts a
worker's skin or eyes, flood or soak frozen tissues w/tepid wtr.Do
not use hot wtr.
