Reports of carcinogenicity: ntp: unknown iarc: yes
health hazards acute and chronic: no ingredients with exposure limts are
present in concentrations >1% in the product formulation. Nuisance
dust may be generated if large quantities of composite are cut or
machined. Dust can cause irr itation to the eyes, nose, throat,
lungs, and skin. The cured plastic may evolve small amounts of
formaldehyde when fabrication or heating of the product occurs. Air
testing of representative fabricat ion operations indicates that
formaldehyde releases are minimal and formaldehyde air
concentrations are below regulatory standards.
explanation of carcinogenicity: formaldehyde has been identified as a
skin sensitizer in low concentrations and a probable human
carcinogen (iarc-2a, pharyngeal cancer excess in formaldehyde
exposed workers). Cotton fabric - phenoli c composite has not been
evaluated for carcinogenicity.
effects of overexposure: irritation of eyes, nose, throat, lungs, and
skin.
First aid: eye contact: for dust, rinse immediately with water. Remove
contact lenses, them flush with large quantities of water for at
least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention. Skin contact: routine
skin contac t with composite or composite dust is unlikely to cause
any hazard. Inhalation: for dust, remove to fresh air. Seek medical
attention if necessary. Ingestion: ingestion of composite dust is
unlikely t o occur in industrial or commercial use.
Hcc: n1
spec gravity: solid
solubility in water: none
appearance and odor: solid, cotton fabric-based material, no dicernible
odor.
Stability indicator/materials to avoid: yes
oxidizers, strong acids and bases.
stability condition to avoid: stable at normal storage conditions. Avoid
heating above 450f.
hazardous decomposition products: co2, co, hcn, similar to wood
products.
conditions to avoid polymerization: will not occur.
Ingred name: nuisance dust
osha pel: 15 mg/m3 t dust
acgih tlv: 10 mg/m3 t dust
